💬 About Smitty's Market
Smitty's Market occupies the most historically significant building in Texas BBQ — the original Kreuz Market location on the Lockhart courthouse square, where smoked meat has been sold continuously since 1948 in the current Smitty's configuration (and much longer as the original Kreuz operation). When the Kreuz family split in 1999, the Schmidt family retained the building and continued under the Smitty's name; the Kreuz family moved to a new location and kept the Kreuz name. The building itself is the experience: enter through a narrow hallway, emerge into the dim, smoke-filled pit room where open wood fires burn in brick pits and meat hangs from hooks. Order directly from the pit masters, who carve and weigh your selection and wrap it in butcher paper. Take it to the dining room or eat at the meat counter. The brisket and pork ribs are the primary items. Unlike Kreuz, Smitty's serves sauce (on the side, for those who want it). The atmosphere is irreplaceable and unlike any dining experience in Central Texas.
