One of Central Texas's most underappreciated assets is what's within driving distance: the Texas Hill Country begins within an hour of Round Rock and Cedar Park, and the day trip options within a two-hour radius include some of the most distinctive destinations in the state. Here's the guide to the best ones.
Under 1 Hour
🔥 Lockhart — The BBQ Capital (45 minutes)
The official BBQ Capital of Texas, with four legendary pit barbecue institutions operating within blocks of each other. Kreuz Market (since 1900), Smitty's Market, Black's Barbecue (since 1932), and Chisholm Trail BBQ are all worth your time. Arrive at opening — premium cuts sell out by early afternoon. Make it a full BBQ morning and nothing else.
🔥 Louie Mueller Barbecue — Taylor (35 minutes)
A James Beard Foundation America's Classics Award winner that is somehow less visited than Lockhart despite being closer to Round Rock. The brisket is extraordinary. The century-old smoke-stained building is an experience unto itself. Taylor's broader food scene is developing — Taylor Cafe provides a solid second meal option.
1-1.5 Hours
⛵ Marble Falls & Highland Lakes (65 miles, ~70 min)
The Highland Lakes chain anchored by Lake LBJ and Inks Lake represents Central Texas's premier lake recreation destination. Marble Falls itself has one of the strongest restaurant and wine scenes per capita of any small Texas city. The Blue Bonnet Cafe (since 1929) is an essential stop. Fall Creek Vineyards and Stone House Vineyard provide Hill Country wine experiences in the same day trip.
🛶 San Marcos & the River (35 miles, ~40 min)
The spring-fed San Marcos River, the Premium Outlets, and Texas State University all in one stop. Zentrails Kayak & Tube for the river experience. The Outlets for shopping. The Marc Restaurant for a quality dinner. Easy to combine river morning with outlet shopping afternoon.
1.5-2 Hours
🌋 Enchanted Rock State Natural Area (~90 miles, ~90 min)
Enchanted Rock is the most distinctive geological feature within two hours of Round Rock — a massive pink granite batholith rising from the Hill Country landscape that you can hike to the summit of with modest effort. The views from the top are extraordinary. Timed entry permits are required (book at Texas Parks & Wildlife website in advance — they sell out for weekend mornings). The hike to the summit and back runs 1.5-2 hours at moderate pace. One of the genuinely iconic Texas outdoor experiences.
🍷 Fredericksburg Wine Country (~130 miles, ~2 hours)
The Texas Hill Country wine region's epicenter, with over 50 wineries within 30 miles of Fredericksburg. A one-day trip is aggressive — a two-day trip with overnight in Fredericksburg is the right way to do it. Becker Vineyards, William Chris Vineyards, and Kuhlman Cellars are among the most respected producers. The German-heritage downtown with its specialty shops, restaurants, and Nimitz Museum deserve time alongside the wine trail.
- Enchanted Rock permits: Book your timed entry at texasstateparks.reserveamerica.com at least 2 weeks in advance for spring and fall weekends. Walk-up entry is available early morning but the lot fills quickly.
- Lockhart timing: Arrive at the first BBQ joint when they open (10:30am). The pilgrimage circuit — Kreuz, Smitty's, Black's, Chisholm Trail — is realistic in one morning if you pace yourself.
- San Marcos river weekday: Summer weekend crowds on the San Marcos River are significant. A weekday trip produces a dramatically better experience with shorter waits at outfitters.
