Wimberley and Dripping Springs represent two of Central Texas's most rewarding day trips — distinct in character but close enough that an ambitious itinerary covers both. From Round Rock or Cedar Park, each is about 60 miles. Here's how to do both right.
Dripping Springs: The Distillery Trail
Dripping Springs has earned the nickname "Wedding Capital of Texas" for its concentration of stunning venues, but it's the craft spirits scene that makes it worth visiting on a non-wedding weekend. Two of Texas's most award-winning distilleries call Dripping Springs home.
Dripping Springs Distilling is the craft spirits pioneer that helped put Texas vodka on the national map — award-winning vodka and gin made with local spring water, in a beautiful dog-friendly tasting room. 4.7 stars, 1,234 reviews.
Treaty Oak Distilling is the more destination-scale experience — 28 acres of Hill Country land with an outdoor amphitheater, full restaurant, and some of Texas's most award-winning bourbon. The Ghost Hill Texas Bourbon is the signature expression. Plan 2-3 hours for the full Treaty Oak experience.
The two distilleries are within 20 minutes of each other. Do both in an afternoon — designate a driver or book a spirits tour van from Austin. Vista West Ranch is also in Dripping Springs if you want to see the venue that anchors the Wedding Capital reputation.
Wimberley: The Hill Country Small Town Experience
Wimberley delivers the Hill Country small-town experience that a thousand Texas travel articles have promised. The key is timing: first Saturday of any month for the legendary Wimberley Market Days — artisans, antiques, food vendors, and the community gathering that makes Wimberley feel like a different era. Other days are quieter and more intimate.
Blue Hole Regional Park is the swimming experience that defines a Wimberley visit — spring-fed, cypress-lined, genuinely beautiful. Book reservations in advance through Wimberley Village's reservation system. Arrive early morning for the best experience before crowds arrive.
After swimming, the two breweries — Wimberley Brewing Company (4.7 stars) and Middleton Brewing (4.7 stars) — provide the afternoon refreshment that caps the outdoor morning. Both have excellent patios.
Combining Both in One Day
The full Dripping Springs + Wimberley circuit is ambitious but doable: Start at Treaty Oak when they open at noon, taste through their program, then head to Wimberley (30 minutes) for an afternoon brewery visit and dinner at one of the square's restaurants. Better as a two-day trip with a Wimberley vacation rental overnight.
- Blue Hole reservations: Book online through the Wimberley Village website. The reservation system opens 14 days in advance. Weekend slots for summer and fall sell out quickly.
- Distillery driving: Designate a driver before you leave, or book a hotel in Dripping Springs. The tasting experiences are genuine pours. Treaty Oak is particularly generous.
- Market Days timing: Wimberley Market Days runs first Saturday of each month, 7am-4pm. Arrive by 9am for the best selection before the crowds peak.
