Moving to Round Rock, TX: The Complete Insider Guide

📅 March 2026  ·  CentralTexas.online Editorial

Round Rock is one of the most popular cities in the Austin metro for a reason: it offers the full package of suburban Texas living at a price point that Austin's core increasingly can't match. Here's the insider guide that goes beyond the marketing brochure.

Why Round Rock?

Round Rock consistently appears in national rankings for best cities to live, and the underlying reasons are consistent: Round Rock ISD schools ranked among the best in Texas, housing that offers more square footage per dollar than Austin's core, low crime rates, a commercial infrastructure that means you rarely have to drive to Austin, and the economic anchor of Dell Technologies' global headquarters. The Kalahari Resorts indoor waterpark has added a destination tourism element. Round Rock Express baseball at Dell Diamond gives the city a genuine minor league sports identity.

Neighborhoods Worth Knowing

Teravista: One of Round Rock's most popular master-planned communities with a golf course, trail system, amenity center, and strong community engagement. Great for families who want the master-planned community experience.

Walsh Ranch: Newer development in southwest Round Rock with a diverse housing price range and easy access to IH-35 for commuters heading into Austin.

Brushy Creek: Established neighborhood in the southwest area with mature trees, excellent trail access, and proximity to the Brushy Creek Regional Trail System.

Old Town Round Rock: The historic downtown area near the Rock that gives Round Rock its name, with a walkable town center, local restaurants, and the kind of established neighborhood character that master-planned communities can't replicate.

Schools: Round Rock ISD

Round Rock ISD is consistently rated among Texas's best school districts. The district is large — 50,000+ students — with multiple high school campuses including Round Rock High, Cedar Ridge, McNeil, and Stony Point. School assignment is address-based, so confirm the specific campus for any home you're considering before purchase. RRISD's dual-language program is particularly strong and worth researching if that's a priority for your family.

Commuting to Austin

The IH-35 commute from Round Rock into Austin is real and must be planned around. Northbound out of Austin in the evening rush (4-7pm) is the worst direction — budget 45-60 minutes for what would be a 25-minute off-peak drive. The MetroRail Red Line connects the Round Rock area to downtown Austin and is genuinely useful for downtown office workers. Working from home two or three days per week dramatically changes the calculus on the Round Rock-Austin commute.

Where Locals Eat

Round Rock has an excellent dining scene that has developed significantly in the past five years. Jack Allen's Kitchen is the local favorite for Texas comfort food and the Sunday brunch that Williamson County families plan their weekends around. Sushi Junai is the go-to for Japanese food. El Charrito has been serving Round Rock Tex-Mex for decades. Pieous Pizza is a genuine Central Texas pizza destination. Torchy's Tacos is the beloved Austin taco brand that Round Rock has adopted as its own. And Oddwood Ales has become the neighborhood brewery that people build their Friday evenings around.
